Protecting the
Constitution and our Rights as Parents
NHELD has been involved in protecting the rights of parents
for many years. We do that by
relying on the rule of law and basic Constitutional principles. For example, it is a basic
Constitutional principle of due process that all those who stand accused
are innocent until proven guilty. We
utilize this principle when parents are accused of neglecting their children
educationally by homeschooling them. We utilize the Constitutional
principle establishing the three branches of government when we seek
redress of grievances for parents legislatively, judicially, or through the
executive power of agency officials and the governor. We utilize the rule of law by compelling
government officials to obey the law when applying it to the right of
parents to homeschool.
Unfortunately, we have seen government officials, local,
state, and federal; in all branches of government turn their back on the
rule of law and Constitutional principles in ever increasing numbers. When those in power ignore the rule of
law and our Constitution, whether it is “for the greater good” or for their
own political reasons, it cannot be tolerated. Without respect and adherence to the rule
of law and our Constitution by our government officials, the people have no
recourse.
While NHELD would love nothing more than to remain aloof
from such weighty issues and to concentrate only narrowly on homeschooling
issues, we cannot hope to prevail on those homeschool issues if there
continues to be a constant disregard on the part of our government
officials for the rule of law and our Constitution. Therefore, NHELD is taking the unusual
stance of joining forces with some other national organizations that are
unifying for the purpose of finding a Constitutional means to make our
government officials abide by their oaths to preserve and protect the
Constitution and the rule of law.
Toward this end, NHELD
is supporting the work of the We the People Foundation for Constitutional
Education and its subsidiary, the We the People Congress. We urge you to go to their website to
find out about them. Robert Schulz founded the organization and has been
working for thirty years to educate the public and our government officials
about the principles and foundation of our Constitution. He also has
undertaken many actions throughout the years in exercise of our first
amendment right to petition the government for redress of grievances. Mr. Schulz explains it best:
“We have reached a point where the People, much like
out Founders, must carefully consider the course of current events and take
actions to defend our unalienable Rights and interests, or Liberty itself
may be irretrievably lost. The most disturbing of all the violations
is our Government's refusal to be held accountable in any manner. Not
only has the federal Judiciary refused to wrestle with the underlying
constitutional wrongs, the Supreme Court has refused to declare the
authority of the People to directly procure relief under the First
Amendment's accountability clause. This is the essence of the
constitutional crisis that must be addressed, and time is of the essence.”
To discuss the grievances caused by our government, and to
find a peaceful, Constitutional means to obtain redress for those
grievances, the We the People Congress has decided that it is time to hold a
Continental Congress, as the founders did.
“A Continental Congress, held in
the spirit of the original Congress in Philadelphia, is an appropriate step
in a peaceful process to address these concerns. The Congress will be
an undertaking of historical importance, a turning point for America, as we
follow the example of our Founding Fathers - a gathering of those with a
proven passion for a Government based upon the consent of the governed, to
discuss the state of our Nation and what the free People of America must do
to restore the Light of Liberty.”
The new Continental Congress will be held from November 9
through November 24, 2009 at the Pheasant Run Resort in St. Charles,
Illinois.
To date, there are twenty-six national organizations that
have voiced their support for the work of the We the People Congress and in
support of the new Continental Congress.
NHELD is proud to announce
its support for this worthy cause as well.
We urge you, no matter what political persuasion you are, to
go to the We the People website
to read about the work that they do, and to spread the word to your friends
and neighbors. This is a chance for
all of us to express our opinions, to voice our concerns, and to engage in
a wholly Constitutional process to find a way to preserve and protect the
Constitution, and to retain our individual freedom, including the right to
instruct our own children.
